Created by Decree No. 21 of 1925 with the objective of coordinating the creation, preparation for editing and publication of the Archive of Máximo Gómez Báez (Baní, Dominican Republic, November 18, 1836 - Havana, Cuba, June 17, 1905) . Known as "the Generalissimo", he was a Dominican soldier of the Ten Years' War in Cuba (1868-1878) and the general in chief of the Cuban revolutionary troops in the Necessary War (1895-1898).
