José Martín Félix Arrate
Considered the first historian of Cuba by many scientists, including Felipe Poey and Francisco Calcagno Monti. He was Perpetual Councilor of the Havana City Council from 1734 and ordinary mayor of the same city from 1752. He is the author of “Key to the New World. Antemural de las Indias Occidentales”, which constitutes a complete sample of criollismo and modernity and which reflects the way of perceiving Cuba, its populations and resources, synthesizing almost two centuries of Spanish colonization.
