Juan Francisco Valerio
Juan Francisco Valerio (Havana, 1829-1878). Cuban writer who collaborated in several publications, including “El Rocío”, “Misifuz” and “Aguinaldo Habanero”. He also worked as an editor for newspapers such as “El Siglo”, “La Serenata”, “La Sombra” and “El Alacrán”. In 1869, during the performance of his play “Perro huevero pero le quemen el hocico” (Dog shall Eat Eggs Even If They Burn His Snout) at the Villanueva Theatre in Havana, the volunteers of Havana - a paramilitary body in the service of Spain - responded with insults to some passages that they considered supportive of the Revolution, which had begun the previous year, and fired at the audience who had responded with cheers for Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, one of the main Cuban patriots (Father of the Homeland). He used the pseudonyms Alacrán, Guruyuz, Narciso, Narciso Valor and Fe.
