Roberto Fernández Retamar was a Cuban poet, essayist, literary critic, cultural and political activist 1. He was born on June 9, 1930 in Havana, Cuba and passed away on July 10, 2019 at the age of 89 1. He was a Doctor of Philosophy and Professor Emeritus at the University of Havana 1. He was also the President of Casa de las Américas from 1986 until his death 1. Among his most well-known essays are “Calibán”, “Nuestra América y Occidente” and “Contra la Leyenda Negra” 1
